LUDLOW TOWN TOURS
Over the years, many visitors to Ludlow have enjoyed a guided town tour of the medieval centre of Ludlow. Led by Roger Furniss, Ludlow Town Guides aim to interest visitors and locals in the history of the town and at the same time raise money to support historical research and local charities.
The 90-minute walks introduce visitors to the history, architecture and life in Ludlow over the centuries including some of today’s planning challenges.
Attendees will walk to Quality Square, St. Laurence’s churchyard, the Bull Ring, Broad Street and Mill Street, and hear about some of the characters who have lived and worked in Ludlow: Walter de Lacy the Norman general, who started the building of the Castle in 1086; Edward 1V; the Princes in the Tower; Catherine of Aragon; Prince Arthur; Lucien Bonaparte; Thomas Farnolls Pritchard, architect of the Iron Bridge; the poet A. E. Housman, and Adrian Jones, the Ludlow vet's son who designed among other sculptures, the quadriga on the Wellington Monument in London at the corner of Hyde Park.
Town Tours are very popular, and in 2024 volunteers will be needed to join the existing group of 14 Town Guides. Please contact Roger on 01584 874205 or email [email protected] if you would like to discuss becoming a guide. Most guides lead tours on one or two occasions per month from April to October inclusive with some extra tours during the winter.
VISIT TO PERSHORE
Shropshire's towns are filled with history and beautiful buildings, and for many years Ludlow Town Guides have enjoyed visiting other market towns in the county.
This year, Ludlow Town Guides organised a visit for themselves to Pershore before the new season of Town Tours began on Saturday April 1st.
The Mayor of Pershore introduced the guides in a lively way to the history of his
town.
Our photo shows Roger Furniss, the Town Guides organiser, with the Mayor.
